Thanks to all who responded. I've tried the daily disposables days ago for
the first time, but because I've a cold and am taking Advil Cold & Sinus,
the doc said it could interfere with comfort. I do feel strange with them
on. Perhaps its the cold, or medication, and/or takes getting used to. I
would imagine that some people could be sensitive to the soft plastic.
Here are the responses:

<<Neutrogena products are gf.....watch out for Vit E in products...often
made from wheat....check archives....lots of products listed there>>

<<I haven't done any research on products per-se except that I have worn
contacts for about 45 years from the hard ones through the very soft
permeable ones. Basically I am down to using Renu, since it was
reccommen
ded for my brand of Contacts. Like you I have sensitive eyes,
and have rejected many procucts over the years but this one works OK.
Talk to your opthalmologist who will tell you the best kind for you,
and then go from there.>>

<<I went to college at Barnard (also in NYC) and got really sick while I
was there (spring grad this year). I took time off and when I went back I
also had a similar dilemma about going out/glam thing. I kind of gave up
for a while and just used chemically stuff and thought about making my
own lipsticks with color from vegetables, etc. but never got around to
it. Can you summarize your list? I'd like to start fussing over my looks
a little more these days......>>

<<Alas, I have no answers for you, but wanted to thank you for posting
your question, especially since there is a lot of ignorance out there
leading people to believe that you cannot possibly rea
ct to something you
do not digest - not so (and what about nicotine patches - they get in your
blood; no one ever proved that it has to enter through the stomach to
affect any part of the body). My son used to get really red cheeks and
then hyper behavior playing with clay or even using water color paints! As
for myself (not celiac) I have found that just about any lotion or makeup -
even just powder, will lead to little bumps (even though they say non-
comedogenic - okay, maybe its not blocking pores, but it causes bumps, so,
who wants it?). I have thought about trying the Japanese rice powder, but
have not gotten around to it. I have seen it in the Natural Lifestyles
catalog. I'm not sure if they have a website, but I might be able to dig
up a catalog phone# if you want to look into that. I used to try lots of
lotions, and use various foundations, powders, eye makeup, but, at 42, I
fi
nd that the most I want is eyeliner, mascara and maybe lipstick; for
evening though I would like to powder my nose, as it does get shiny
(combination skin - very dry, except t-zone). Good luck & I look forward
to your summary. (I think the best look is a healthy glow from lots of
fluids, plenty of exercise)>>

<<I doubt there would be any wheat/gluten in eye solutions. I had
cataract surgery (at 45!) and all the various eye drops were gluten-free.
I would recommend you seek out a gluten-free list on-line that lists over
the counter meds etc...to be sure. As for Neutrogena - I am very sensitive
to cosmetics and I've never had a problem with any of their products.
(They make wonderful moisturizers! I love their new Extra Firming line
with copper.) Their Lip Plush lipsticks are gluten-free. ;-) Good luck and
be glamorous!>>

<<My face has reacted to some cosmetics -- I t
hink mostly in the
Elizabeth Arden line, but not really sure. I do use MAC's crème blusher -
only it's called 'Cream Color Base'. And I really like it. No reactions at
all. Otherwise I tend to use Clinique products, and some Paula's
Choice.>>

<<I've worn contacts (hard and soft) since I am 13 and I am 53 now. I've
never had a reaction to any solutions and I am deeply Celiac with DH
tendencies. If you are so concerned you can always just use daily wear
soft lenses and use the saline solution only and not the chemical storage
cleaners. You can also consider getting Lasix surgery to correct your
vision. I know many people who've done that. They give you a screening
to make sure you are a good candidate; I never was because I have dry eye
syndrome. I use Bare Escentuals mineral powder without any trouble as
there is no gluten in it at all, as is the case with Jane Iredale mineral
mak
eup. Jane Iredale also has lipsticks and shadows, which can be worn
safely. Go to her website www.janeiredale.com. Some people like Beauty
Control, although I've never tried it myself. Neutrogena is good, and
anyone can develop and allergy which is not gluten related, to any product
at any time. I am a licensed esthetician and I see trouble all the time.
Sometimes you suddenly develop an allergy to a product you've used for
year. Your skin changes over time. You might want to go visit a skin
care specialist and get a good facial and skin diagnosis and
recommendation for products which are safe for your type of skin.
A dermatologist I've worked with told me that it is highly rare that
people develop gluten reaction to products, but I know that I have. I
used Dermalogica and some of their products, but only a few, contain some
wheat protein, and I've reacted to some and not others. I've used Mac
lipsti
ck without trouble, as well as their lip liners. By the way, all lip
liners are made by the same three worldwide manufacturers/distributors.
Just keep reading labels and return what doesn't work for you. In NY
State, you can legally return used cosmetics if you have the package and
receipt and return it within a reasonable time period. If they tell you
you can't, they are wrong and they must take it back, see the Manager.
Watch out for shampoos and conditioners. I've used some Aveeda hair care
products with disasterous results. Especially the Brilliant line of
Aveeda (with the clear tubes and blue tops), and the Volumizing Spray,
which cause my entire head to breakout. When I read the lable (duh!)
after using it, I saw Wheat Protein and nearly fainted. This is why I
say, read, read, read the labels before you buy. Good luck to you. I know
how important it is to want to look good, and believ
e me, you can.>>

<<I was diagnosed with celiac disease 4 years ago at age 48. I have worn
gas-permeable contact lenses since I was 20. I use the Boston products
and have not had any gluten-type reaction. I also use Neutrogena lipstick
and hand cream with no gluten reactions.>>

<<Despite Neutrogena stating products are GF , I still seem to have a
problem with them. I do have DH.>>

<<i had posted on this about a year and a half ago when i was getting
hard contacts. I had problems with solutions - even ones that said they
were gf - I had just about given up (sadly) when i got an email from
someone on the list who said she used a gf solution - but rinsed, rinsed,
rinsed, with saline. i tried it and it works for me. I use optimum
cleaners - and just saline to insert the lenses. don't know what kind
you are looking at using - but maybe you could try something like that. i
a
m *very* sensitive - hand soaps, makeup, etc. i use a covergirl
eyeshadow and lipstick - but now they will not say they are gf - and they
did before - so i have to comeup with something new. I use covergirl
mascara too - and maybeline eye liner . But i have seen lots of input
on makeup lately, if you do an archive search. i know somepeople might
hassle you about the topical stuff, but you are not crazy (i was beginning
to think i was, so many people doubted me) there are those of us who react
that way too.>>

<<I've been using the Bausch & Lomb for almost ten years without
problems.>>

<<I've worn contact for years and have had no problems. Just be sure to
use the products that are thimerisol free. Many people have a sensitivity
to thimerisol, so it is best to avoid it. I have never had any problems
with my solutions and I use AO Sept products and Target-brand saline. I've

also never had any reaction to the Neutrogena GF products. However I am
allergic to certain red dyes in makeup and have had to search for the ones
I don't react to. If you think that's your problem, email me again and
I'll tell you the ones that work for me. BTW-most department store
cosmetics will let you return cosmetics if you have a reaction and will
give you your money back. Good luck!>>

<<I wear contacts, use ReNu contact lens solutions--no problems.>>

<<I have such a reactive skin that I get sores from just about
anything. There is only one kind of soap i can use,and it is harsh.I even
tried just mashing avocado(came out in sores) and banana ,ditto. Now I am
using plain Danon yogurt instead of soap on my face, and on my legs, has
cleared up eczema and moisturises all in one. This is my personal
solution, others may have milk etc. allergies,so it won't work for them.I
am now
43 years old,so glad to have something to put on the wrinkles at
last :-),but on a positive note I have had a lot of people ask what my
skincare routine is LOL ,and I can only attribute my relative
unwrinkliness to not being able to wear cosmetics all these years.>>

<<I have used Neutrogena Extra Gentle Cleanser for removing makeup, and
have had no problems with it. Also, I use a Bare Escentuals product in
place of soap and have found it satisfactory. I have a 64 oz. container
of it, and can give you the numbers from this container and the
information on it. I don't have any special name for it, although most of
the Bare Escentuals products go by fancy names. I was told by the clerks
that this is the only soap product that doesn't have gluten in it. I
think the gluten comes from vitamin e, which comes from wheat, in their
case. Here is the information:
Bare Escentuals
Esc Shampoo for

I hope this helps.>>

Thanks Again!
