Thanks to all of you that responded to my question - Have any diagnosed
celiacs had difficulty breathing when you accidentally ingested gluten?

Here are the responses:

Yes! I ingested and inhaled Gluten the other day and I had difficulty
breathing and fainting like symptoms. I also have asthma but this was
definitely related to Gluten. it's awful!
-----
Yes all the time! Normally you only get these symptoms if you are allercic
to something, not intolerant as celiacs are.... Since I am allergic to nuts
i can feel the difference, I have also asthma and it feels as that when I eat
gluten. I have figured out the reason to why I get them ( I don't say this
IS the reason, it seemes to be for me.) , when I eat gluten I get very much
gas in my stomac and I think it is the gas causing this feeling, the
preassure gets too high in some way. I know I just feel as i get breathing
problems because when i use my Pef 8an instrument for asthma control) I get
normal measures...... Hope this can help you in some way! But I think you
should takl with your doctor about it and do some teats to eleminate the
risks of other causes as asthma or allergy.
-----
I know that some people's response to wheat is asthma, so it would not
surprise me if celiacs reacted this way, too.
-----
I was an undiagnosed celiac for nine years and several times I had
difficulty breathing. My research revealed the average person expells
1-3 litres of gas per day, while the celiac may have to deal with 7-9
litres. This gastric buldup causes the bloating and difficulty
breathing. This may or may not be your answer so please keep your Doctor
aware as this could be a more serious matter.
-----
Well, not exactly. What has happened to me is that going GF has revealed
that I also have a Dairy Problem.

Now, 1.5 years GF, if I eat a bowl of ice cream, my bronchials "shut down" in
2 - 3 hours. My chest becomes very "heavy." I had always noted a phlegm
situation with milk products, but had not connected the "wheezing" situation
until this month!

My system is WonderFul now that I am GF, but there has been much more
revealed. I am also sensitive to Corn.
And cashews.
And pistachios.
-----
I get shortwindedness or air hunger, from time to time. Not sure if it's
due to gluten, but could be. No other diagnosis. Everything tested negative.
(Stress is probably my problem.)
-----
I had such severe respiratory problems all my life that I was on all sorts of
inhalers and steroids and you name it, until I was finally was diagnosed with
Celiac's. Now I use my one inhaler 2-3 times a week for mild asthma problems
and that's about it. I am 100% convinced there is a direct link to breathing
difficulty and Celiac when gluten is being ingested in any amount.
-----
Yes, I have this but not very often. I don't know if it is from an
accidental gluten ingestion or not. I know there are times when I have
found out later that I had consumed gluten and I did not have the
breathing problem...but I don't have any recognizable reaction when I do
ingest gluten. I did have a lot of trouble with breathing problems (
mostly with the feeling that I couldn't take a deep breath unless I bent
backward) in the years before my diagnosis but it is a very rare thing
for me to have now.
-----
I have not been diagnosed with CD yet, but my allergist strongly suspects it
from blood tests and symptoms. Before he told me this, I was being treated
for allergies and asthma. Three months ago I had eaten a quart of beef
barley soup that I had made myself without wheat, corn, milk, sugar, yeast
(things I'm allergic to) and found myself unable to take a deep breath 2
hours later. I felt as though I was suffocating. Thinking this was my
asthma, I called my allergist. He had me do a peak flow reading and said it
wasn't asthma because I could exhale without difficulty. That led him to
believe it was related to the barley and got him thinking about CD. For the
immediate crisis he told me to take baking soda or Vitamin C, which helped.
He's not sure if its the Candida infection I have or the possibility of CD,
but the elimination of gluten and sugar pretty much controls it.

I do feel "short of breath". I think this is because my stomach gets
blown up.

That's all I can tell you. :)
-----
Yes, I have had difficulty breathing when accidently injesting gluten.
I often wondered if other celiacs had the same problem.
----
I just wanted you to know that your not alone in having breathing
problems when exposed to gluten. My doctor says that it seems to affect
my bronchiole tubes. I also get very jittery, like I've had a few too
many cups of coffee. Gives you a bit of a panicky feeling. No one seems
to know what to do to improve it. If you hear of anything, would be
interested.
-----
Yes, lots. I think you are referring to the difficulty breathing which comes
with anxiety- a feeling that something bad is going to happen. It goes away
in about 20 minutes, leaves you feeling weak and listless for several hours
after and is not due to any real shortage of oxygen. Read the post by
MsKatlee on today's list about depression. It is the same thing, expressed
in another way- "heaving a big sigh."

Another cause of the same feeling in the early days after going gf, is eating
too many carbohydrates (sugar and starch.) People who have been starving
discover they can eat and they over do it. 2 hours later their blood sugar
drops below normal and that is accompanied by the anxiety feeling and they
then eat too much more carbohydrates to try to feel better, etc, etc. Good
luck- if neither of these thoughts seem to relate, you should check with your
doctor and see if your system is functioning normally.

Yes, I do have always problems breathing when I had a gluten accident. It
feels real heavy on the chest. if you hear what it could be, can you please
summarize?
-----
Yes, my daugter Jessica. She's 11.
-----
I don't have difficulty breathing right after the accident, but I do when
suffering acute pain from the accident the next day. During the pain I tend
to hold my breath, which I discovered only makes it worse. I have to focus
hard on breathing smoothly and deeply to lessen the pain and distress.
-----
Yes Jennifer I do....tho I don't know for sure if I am a celiac but I have
all the symptoms everyone mentions here. I have been clinically diagnosed as
allergic to wheat which was gonna be one of my posts ...are there any celiacs
that have also been diagnosed as allergic to wheat. But yes I very much so
have difficulty breathing when I get wheat and also get lethargic which I am
sure is due to the difficulty breathing.
-----
If you have trouble breathing after you ingest gluten, you may be
experiencing an acute allergic reaction to the offending substance.
Subsequent exposures could be even more severe - I suggest you contact your
physician on Monday and notify them of the situation.
-----
I almost always have difficulty breathing after gluten ingestion, like an
asthma reaction, but my doctor maintains that it "couldn't be"
related..... I disagree with him.
-----
Not only Yes, but my celiac disease masqueraded as asthma for decades.
Three months after going gluten free I threw away the nebulizers, inhalers,
etc., for good. I occasionally feel slightly uncomfortable, but never had
another asthma attack. It has been three years.
-----
Yes, I get an asthma attack when I accidentally ingest gluten. Turned out
that all my asthma was due to that, now I don't get it anymore, except for
mistakes.
-----
Wow the light just came on; yes I had difficulty breathing and i never made
the connection--now I look back the past two months I have been gf and
realize I have NOT had difficulty breathing during this time.
-----
Is that what's wrong with me. I took in gluten today accidently and I keep
sighing. Like i'm out of breath.
-----
Yes, absolutely. I have difficulty breathing when I ingest gluten.
It's very scary until you know why you can't breathe deeply into your
lungs or just simply can't get a 'good' deep breath. I feel as though I
just can't catch my breath.

I now use it in my favor. It's a real tip-off that I've made a mistake
in my diet. In addition to breathing difficulties after eating
wheat/rye/barley/oats, I also get shortness of breath when I eat corn.
I no longer eat corn.
