Regarding the posting from Christie Schroeter regarding Fosamax, I
attended the same GIG conference and heard the comments from Dr. Green.
I was surprised and went up to clarify the issue in person. Dr. Green
does not recommend using Fosamax for an undiagnosed celiac. He suggests
for a newly-diagnosed celiac to wait to use this drug, but instead use
dairy products, calcium & vitamin D supplements, and weight-bearing
exercise to encourage bone stability until you have healed on the
gluten-free diet, which might take up to a year. Get another bone
density test and then you might try Fosamax, if necessary. Yes, Dr.
Green was hesitant about Fosamax but he did not tell exactly why.
