What a difference. Years ago, if you searched for gf on Staten Island, there was slim pickings, but now, there are quite a few options.

Today, we were traveling thought and I googled and found Joe's of Avenue U, located at 145 Graves Lane.

They have a very compressive gf menu, and I as reassured that the chef knows how to prepare the food without contamination. This is an Italian restaurant...but no pizza.

I had corn pasta with two meatballs for $22. I also had bruschetta...three small slices of toasted (probably tapioca) bread with diced tomatoes. (not great) So...although I would recommend the place, because of the many options, I did think that the gf menu was pricey compared to the regular menu...which was much less. Most of the gf entrees were less than the meatballs, though, and I loved the sauce. The bread...In this day and age, with Udi's, Rudi's, Against the Grain, Schar...and so many others....I would have been happier with something more than the old-fashioned tapioca or rice type loaf. They also brought me a basket of toasted tapioca (rice?)slices...no charge.

I'd go back for the meatballs...and I would love to try some of their fish dishes. Other than for Pasta Pomodoro in Voorhees, NJ, I have never seen such a long menu for gf...including desserts, soups, even beer.

Their menu indicated glutenfree, dairy free, nut free, and lactose free, on the gf menu....as it applied, and it asks you to tell them of allergies.

I used to travel through Staten Island often. Now, it's rare, but if I am cutting through to Brooklyn or Long Island, it is on my list.
There are two days when the chef who does gf isn't there. Check the website or call 718-227-2405. I did not ask if the original Joes of Ave. U...which is really on Ave U...in Brooklyn, does gluten free, but it's big at this place.
