Dear Listmates,
First, let me say WOW; it’s actually quite touching to send out a ‘help’ message and then to receive input from people with relevant experience. Thanks go out to my 23 respondents. I feel well armed with experience-proven information and now have several new avenues to work with to identify the cause and treat this peripheral neuropathy. And for those people who actually invited me to call, thanks but I cannot; I actually live in Indonesia. (I AM SO ALONE living with celiac disease here, and very much appreciate this listserver).

My original query requested info on the cause and treatment for my peripheral neuropathy in my left hand. (My doctor here first treated my high cholesterol and hyper-aggressive thrombosites, and is now treating me with Neurontin and mecobalamin. I’m 49, and have been 100% gf for more than 3 years. My finger/hand are still numb, at time of writing, so I will follow through on many of your suggestions. Many thanks to all.

SUMMARY

OTHER CAUSES AND COURSES OF ACTION:
• See a NEUROLOGIST, to check for spinal disk problems or bulging disk in my spine (and possibly get a MRI of spine or an EMG (electromyelogram and nerve conduction test to narrow down which discs were likely involved). Could lead to epidural steroid injections to relieve the inflammation and pain & physical therapy.
• See a NEUROLOGIST and get a nerve conduction test (also see: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/pinched-nerve/DS00879
• Check for MS (multiple sclerosis), another autoimmune disease.
• See a CHIROPRACTOR; maybe it’s an extraneous swelling caused by inflammatory reaction.
• See a CHIROPRACTOR, maybe it’s a misalignment in the neck bones / pinched nerve;
• See a SCENAR THERAPIST (advised to look this treatment up on the internet) (I live in Indonesia, so not likely to have a therapist in my area);
• & QUIT DAIRY completely (I suppose I will have to do this eventually, but I’m addicted & probably allergic to dairy!)

• Further investigate my reaction to FOODS that have GLUTEN-LOOK-ALIKE substances (e.g., yeast, milk, egg, soy, and corn, and coffee, sesame, chocolate); (all of these look-alikes could be keeping me reactive and could be damaging my nerves) (especially noted, were cross reactions with yeast and mold infections (Yeasts & candida are a problem with me); (well, this will require further research on my part, but websites were recommended: Check www.theglutensyndrome.net particularly the Medical Diagrams www.theglutensyndrome.net/VojdaniDiagrams.htm The research is there.

• Further investigate the CHOLESTERAL problem (investigate why is my body producing so much cholesterol, what is inflaming/damaging me so this much cholesterol is needed, and deal with that issue). See www.westonaprice.org, where there are 2 good starter articles and there are lots of articles on cholesterol under the "know your fats" link. They have a tour of website articles that is worth taking. See:
http://www.westonaprice.org/traditional_diets/ancient_dietary_wisdom.html
 http://www.westonaprice.org/brochures/wapfbrochure.html
• Cholesterol: (also noted, check blood sugar levels; noted that there are lots of causes for cholesterol problem, including excessive sugar… Can use Metform to control

• Check for LOW THYROID http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/
• Further work on my gf DIET (healthy carbs, healthy fats, good protein; see www.schwarzbeinprinciple.com)
• Further investigate CROSS-CONTAMINATION ISSUES (e.g., lipstick, lotions, hidden gluten)
• Sensitivity to FLUORIDE water;
• REDUCE the CAFFEINE (drats; my #1 addiction)
• ANEMIA can cause numbness
• EXCESSIVE SUGAR could contribute to peripheral neuropathy (from a diagnosed diabetic).
• Check for TENDONITIS (aspirin and ice at bedtime can help).
• Did I have surgery, a stroke or diabetes? (No, but maybe relevant to others).

DRUG ISSUES: RECOMMENDATIONS HERE RANGED FROM:
• Continue the NEURONTIN for up to 6 weeks (I had only had it for 1 week, at the time of the post; it can be slow-acting); Take supplements and reduce caffeine intake at the same time;
• According to a ’60 min’ report, NEURONTIN is NOT effective for carpal neuropathy and it has absolutely no benefit to neuropathy patients.
• Use MSM (actually, I don’t know what this is, but there is a NOW brand)
• Switch from NEURONTN to TOPAMAX & TRILIPTAL (+botox shorts along the nerve root); (One person gained 40 lbs on Neurontin)

CONTROL FOR NEUROPATHY & DISK PROBLEM and CONTROL GIVEN CARPAL TUNNEL & DIABETES: RECOMMENDAITONS RANGED FROM:
• B12 every 5 days (use methyl or hydroxyl type) + alphalipoic (2 per day)
• B6 & B12
• AVOID CAFFEINE for 2 days before taking B12 (4 tablets) with FOLIC ACID + 1 tsp butter for 2 days in a row; REPEAT once a month
• Heal the nerves: 100 mg B complex at each meal;
• 500 mg B complex 3 times a day;
• B12 & Vit D
• ALA (alpha lipoic acid) 100 mg 2 or 3 times a day.

For carpel tunnel (and yes, I work with my hands at the computer a lot):
• Take 500 mg B6 before bed (within 2 weeks, pain was gone);
• B6, 500 mg 3 times a day;
• Omega 3; Fat is good for nerves
• Other vitamins and supplements (Vit E, primrose, borage)
• Use a brace at night
• Try Yoga to keep muscles loosened up;

CONTROL DURING ALL MY LONG HAUL FLIGHTS
• Support stockings (yes, of course, you are right Lisa)
