FYI - I was delighted to read two good articles in the latest
September/October issue of Digestive Health & Nutrition. I wrote to the
editors some months ago because their articles on IBD and IBS contained
so many symptoms indicative also to Celiac Disease (which was not
mentioned, of course). They had told me they would be including an
article on CD. I am glad the task was given to Danna Korn. I really
appreciate, and we should all appreciate her writing it and alerting
another segment of the population about Celiac Disease. Unfortunately,
this magazine seems to stress the disorders where there is a pill (with
advertisements, of course) for a treatment.

In the same issue there was an article about "Problem
Foods". A particular doctor's views were cited all through it.

This doctor, Sheila E. Crowe, M.D., was our former chapter physician
advisor, whom I respect a great deal. Gluten intolerance is even
mentioned a bit in it. I wrote to Dr. Crowe, and the following is her
answer.

"Thanks for your comments Janet - I think I was
the only specialist she was able to interview for the problem foods
piece so you may be right about how much input came from me. I haven't
seen the issue this is in yet nor the piece on CD. You are right that CD
doesn't have the profile that some other GI diseases do, but there
certainly is growing interest in this condition at all levels. I am
giving Rheumatology Grand Rounds at UVA next week and then I am talking
at the joint ACG- Virginia GI society meeting on Sept 20 to a GI
audience on CD. I see there is quite a bit on CD in the main ACG meeting
in Oct. in Baltimore with Joe Murray and Alessio talking there. I
believe Ciaran Kelly will speak at the postgraduate course for DDW in
2004 and I will do a meet-the-professor session at that meeting, both on
CD. (to be confirmed). Things are different from 10 years ago in terms
of patient and physician awareness of the condition and I expect the NIH
may well encourage more research in the area."

I hope Dr. Crowe will be invited to speak at a future
national conference. She is very knowledgeable and personable as well.

I am heartened that CD is gradually, although too slowly,
becoming more known in both the medical community and lay population, by
virtue of Danna's efforts and certain respected medical professionals
(like Drs. Crowe, Fasano, Murray, Kelly and more). I applaud you all.
