Hi Listmates----
I asked about resources for travellers in Spain. I got a few respnses....
and I found the message I started to summarize last year - that was put
away in my hold file for further editing and that got waylaid when I had to
cancel my travel plans due to a health problem. I shall retrieve the held
messages and send to you shortly.

Thank you to those of you who have responded. I feel very heartened to
hear that there's this large department store with branches throughout much
of Spain, El Cortes Ingles. It has a large GF section which is usually
located in the basement. . There's one in the heart of Seville, and in
Granada and several all over Madrid. You'll find any cookies, bread, etc
there, including lots of great European brands that are fun to try.

Some took along meal cards translated into Spanish as well as in English.
The restaurants' staff usually have been responsive to the GF needs.

One reported that she had no trouble eating out. For lunch I usually relied
on the ensalada
mixta, the mixed salad--although I was sick of it by the end of the 9 days.

For dinner I had wonderful fresh fish and vegetables and had no problem
communicating my specifics.

There's a special Cuban restaurant in Sevilla. When the writer took out
her card for the waiter, he studied it and looked at me curiously and asked
"estas celiac?". Turned
out he had just been diagnosed this year and he got so excited he pulled
out
his cell phone to call his wife and tell her the mama of the family was
celiac. He is also the owner of Havana---so if you see it you will be
guaranteed a good GF dinner! The address is C/Golfo, 3(Alfalfa) in
Sevilla. This is near Plaza de El Salvador 606.71.64.56

One should beware of Spanish Gazpacho which always has bread crumbs in it
.Also, stay away from the breakfast hot chocolate which contains flour.

Here is the e-mail address of the Coeliac Society in Spain:-

I'm now looking forward to my trip... incidentally, I'll be hiking with the
Backroads group in the Basques region - they have been most responsive to
my dietary needs, and I feel confident it will be respected.
