I have been gluten free for about 7 weeks. I started going gluten free
about the week before Christmas. During this time I was miserable. I
felt hungry all the time, had voluminous diarhea and insomnia. I could
not sleep no matter what I tried. I started feeling better after three
weeks, but still was having difficulty sleeping. I was hungry through
the night and the constant feeling of hunger and continual stomach
growling was keeping me awake. I tried warm milk, hot tea, tylenol
sleeping pills, reading, watching T.V. you name it, I tried it. The
Tylenol helped but I found myself only sleeping about 2-4 hours after
taking the pills. When I went in to visit the Dr. in the middle of Jan.
I told him my symptoms were better except I couldn't sleep and my stomach
felt uncomfortable all the time. He gave me a generic form of Elavil
(10 mg.) and said it would calm my stomach down and help me sleep. I
have been taking it for about 3 weeks and it seems to be helping alot. I
still had a few nights when I couldn't sleep, but it seemed like once I
had a few good nights of sleep I got back into a sleeping pattern. Right
now I'm experiencing a gluten reaction as I must have eaten something I
shouldn't, this week is the first I haven't felt as well as the last few
weeks. I notice that when I have a reaction, I wake up at night hungry.
However, I have been able to go back to sleep after eating. Perhaps this
medication would help for you. I think my lack of sleep was also do to
anxiety over this desease. I wish you well and hope you find something
that helps. I no how miserable this is.
