As per Pam's follow-up....some people were interested in the "low
gluten" hosts which are presently allowed by the Roman Catholic Church.
This position was issued in 1996 and is the position of the Roman
Catholic Church re/ gluten and the Eucharist. The text of this can be
read at www.celiac.com under the sub heading: Miscellaneous
information.

A source for hosts is included at this site, but it is not clear to me
if these particular hosts would be included under the provisions of this
information. As per the company, they contain wheat starch but are
classified in their printed information as "GLUTEN--FREE" Hosts.

I wrote to this source last year and received the following information:

The hosts contain:

Wheat Starch, Whey Powder, Potato Starch, Sugar, Stabilisers, Guar Gum,
Pectin, Raising Agents, Glucono-delta-Lactone Sodium Bicarbonate,
Calcium Carbonate, Dried Glucose Syrup, Niacin, Iron Powder, Thiamin,
Vitamin B6, Riboflavin.

They come in boxes of 50. Postage is charged at cost.
A medical request is not required to place an order.
Hosts are square in shape and have small crosses patterned on the host.
The hosts last up to 2 years if stored in a cool dry place.

This information was contained in a letter signed by Kevin Shingler of

Presently, EnerG foods is producing a gluten free host and these can be
mail-ordered at a very reasonable price. Unfortunately, however, they
do not closely resemble the wafer used in most RC churches. These hosts
are most certainly not included in the above position, but there are
compassionate and understanding priests who are consecrating them for
their celiac parishioners who for whatever reasons are unable to receive
communion by the cup. Cavanagh and Meyer-Vogelpohl no longer carry GF
hosts and I have not found any other sources.
