BlankI was diagnosed by the 4th gastro I saw. He called gastro #3 that had referred me to him and #3's first response was 'she can't be she is 75 lbs overweight.

Add me to your list.

As I recovered I lost weight, then after I was feeling better and cooking all GF the exact foods I had given up I regained the weight and remained overweight until May of 04. I then joined Weight Watchers and have kept the weight off for 1 year. I lost the 65+ pounds in 6.5 months. Being a celiac made it easy for me. Now I just have the challenge of continuing the lifestyle.

My son and husband were on the slim side (not skinny) when diagnosed with celiac. I was pleasingly plump so to speak (6 yrs ago). Maybe 20 lbs overweight. Still am. My husband's cousin looked like she'd been in a concentration camp when diagnosed. We celiacs come in all shapes and sizes. Have fun with your survey!

I was over weight when I was diagnosed due to being on steriods for so many
years prior. I'm also thinking people who have constipation instead of
diarhea tend to be overweight instead of underweight also. From what I was
reading some of us only digest fat and an not the nuetriants to burn the
fat. I've had a trip with doctors including those that didn't believe I was
celiac (although confirmed by biopsy) because I was over weight. They also
didn't do any follow up because I was over weight and evry thing was blamed
on my being over weight. My inflamatory test for heart was 7.9 (very high)
and that was blamed on my being over weight. When I finally got a nuetrition
test done (took 4.5 years to get and only after I lost the weight and was
back within normal range) I tested critically deficiant on vitamin E, zince,
calcium and CQ10 (anti-inflamatory for heat enzym)! I started to take
prescription supplements and presto, my inflamatory is down to 1. Go figure.
It had nothing to do with my weight, I was difficiant vital neutriants for
my heart. By the way, I lost the weight so they would no longer have excuses
for on going problems that were not being resolved.

Just for your poll. The numbers today show just as many overweight folks a underweight ... I think I read 40% somewhere and then 20% at what is considered normal weight. Not sure of those numbers exactly.

I was and am still overweight. I was diagnosed approx 2 years ago.

I think a lot of the really overweight people I see have gluten intolerance. I'm a massage therapist, and I can really spot the signs.

My daughter was losing weight; I am overweight (5'6" & 225#). She had low positive blood test, positive enterolab test and biopsy. I have only had enterolab and one positive blood test. I am insulin resistant and at risk for type 2 diabetes.

The head of the support group that operates at York, Pa. hospital was so heavy she had bariatric surgery. She is diabetic, which type I don't know, and I am guessing was 300-400 lbs. before the surgery.

When I was dx'd I was about 20 lbs. overweight. And it was my idea to test
for celiac and found to have positive antibodies and endoscope.

FYI and in a nutshell: I'm obese:

I was born in 1961, started getting chubby around puberty (1973). Was always the chubbiest in my group in high school, say by 30-40 lbs; I did a 10-day liquid protein fast to lose some weight, promptly gained it back plus 40 more by college (1979) (exzema rears its ugly rash on my arms - I worked and ate a sandwich a day at Blimpies!) In college was free to eat what I wanted and that was homemade cheese tortillas (my fault there)! What did I know about nutrition?

Engaged in 1980, and went to American Weight Loss Centers to eat 500 calories a day and did Jazzercize: went from 180 to 140 for the wedding in 1981. First year of marriage gained 80-100 pounds (didn't have a scale) cause I worked full time and stopped exercise. Ate a lot of Wendy's taco salads for lunch and homemade lasagnas for dinner! Constipated a lot. Burned my leg and it wouldn't heal for 9 months; gangrene even! Yuck. Dermatologist who helped with leg thought I had diabetes; but no (yeah)! Was on birth control for one year; didn't like how it made me feel (fluid retention), so I quit and haven't used any since (and only 1 pregnancy all those years; never felt I had the energy for more, but now think it could have been a fertility issue)!

Moved from UT to CA and was DEpressed.

Moved from CA to NV, first house, and not so stressed. :-) Lived there 7 years and finally felt at home. Got pregnant in 1988 with a starting weight of 220; gained 40 lbs. during pregnancy. Insomnia started. Didn't lose any weight after giving birth. Brain fog (chalked up to sleepless nights with baby who likes to projectile vomit, and when I revisit photos of her, she had distended stomach). Exzema flared again. Felt extreme anxiety on the inside, but projected calm and serene on the outside. I didn't want to upset my kid with my anxiety, ya know? Dermatologist gave me prednisone cream, which I used on my hands for maybe 1-2 years. Left hip joint prevented me from getting off the ground; then I couldn't get up out of chairs. I had to start slowly and then I'd become mobile. I have stayed at 260 for years.

Moved from NV to VA. Stressed/anxiety. Diagnosed as hypothyroid around 1994 or 6? (I can't remember! Are you surprised?) Was excited to find this "answer" to my fatigue; coincidentally met a person who taught me a little about nutrition. Read/followed book/diet called The 28-Day Rejuvenation Diet (wheat-free diet)!!!! I started walking the dogs. After a while I lost 15 pounds and felt awesome! Had several incidents where if I were to press my chest against the tub to bathe my toddler for a length of time, when I'd arise, my heart felt like a Mac truck was atop me. I couldn't breathe! Noone knew what to make of it. Also, bare feet hurt terribly if I was puttering all day on wood floors. Wore tennis shoes and this helped.

Moved from VA to AK! Depressed in the winter dark; was the energizer bunny in the summer sunlight. Discovered night blindness; got glasses, and was certainly cold all the time, too! Went on Prozac. Kid diagnosed ADD-Inattentive. Diagnosed myself with same thing.

Moved from AK to UT, still stressed and anxiety-ridden. Started chewing cups and cups of ice a day. Dentist tells me not to, that exteme temps are bad for teeth which can crack! Still manage to suck the life out of ice. Found out I was anemic. Doc said "pica" was sign of nutritional need. Developed heart palpitations. Dietary supplements didn't help. Quit taking them and Prozac; thought the regular sunshine would help.

Moved from UT to VA. Exzema flaired once in a while. Itchy upper back. Depression lingers. Decide to go back to work 6 hrs/day. Stressed more. Still chewing ice. Started walking dogs again; barely had time to eat, but would force myself to eat as well as I could and drink a lot of water. Got a personal trainer. Lost 40 pounds.

Moved from VA to OK last Sept. Stressed, depressed, tired! Tired of being so tired! Working on adrenaline. Thyroid test up. Meds upped. Rechecked thyroid meds at 1-month appt and asked doc for iron testing. Came back extremely low, and was told to have colonscopy to check for internal bleeding, maybe cancer. I researched anemia online and asked gastro doc to also do endoscopy. He did, and found my celiac condition! It has only been a week and now I know why I've felt depressed all my life! I'm planning to reread the 28-Day Rejuvenation book again! Have gone three days gluten free and some brain fog is lifting. Was discouraged to see post the other day by poor lady with returning brain fog after 7 years :-( .

For what it's worth, my husband's father just died of non-Hodgkins lymphoma at 72. He was a recovered alcoholic and had pernicious anemia and hypothyroidism. Now that I've been diagnosed and reading about celiac, I bet he had it and wasn't diagnosed (as he didn't like to go to the doctor). My husband's mom was diagnosed 4-5 months ago (71); but she was also diagnosed 45 or more years ago she says. She had terrible stomach aches. They went away and she ate bread all the time until this more recent bout. You never know with her and her stories (brain fog). She's also hypoglycemic and has congestive heart failure. This latest diagnosis for her is real, however. Both of his parents were/are extremely thin (he was 6' and 140 lbs and she's 5'10" and 103, she lost 10 pounds going gluten-free). My husband has asthma, high blood pressure and gout and is overweight. Loves sweets. I want him to get tested, but for now he's resistant.

Do you have celiac? Hope you don't mind all the info. I look forward to your results.
So yes there are heavy celiacs.
