I asked a little while ago about tooth enamel defects in celiacs - the
specific cause & people's experiences with this problem. Thanks for the
responses!

Several mentioned that flouride overdose or tetracycline taken by the
mother during pregnancy can cause discolored teeth. Neither of these is
the case with my son (he drank well water with very little naturally
occuring flouride until age 3 and I've never taken tetracycline). Most
felt that the defects in celiacs are due to some nutrient deficiency,
but no one could definitively say which one (some suspect calcium) or
exactly when the damage happens (just that it's very early in life). I
guess I was hoping for something more specfic.

As with my son, others have problems with decay due to the enamel
defects. A couple had horror stories involving losing a number of teeth;
but for the others it seems that after diagnosis and once the worst of
the defects are fixed, there may not be any worse of a battle with decay
than anyone else has. I'm going to assume my son fits into the second
category! I did hear from several who are having their child's teeth
whitened because of the discoloration. A few mentioned having problems
getting insurance to cover some of the dental work that's been needed,
which is discouraging.

If anyone has anything to add to this topic, I'd love to hear from you.
If I ever find out more about this (a couple of people thought there may
be an article out there on this topic), I'll send an update.

Thanks again,
Tami
