Hello again,

I had included a post script to my emergency kit posting last week about how
to cook brown rice without making a mess. I am overwhelmed with the number
of responses that I have received. Thanks to all who responded.

The general consensus seems to be to get a rice steamer. Black & Decker
seemed to be the popular choice. Sunbeam was also mentioned. I will
probably do this eventually but I have a small kitchen with 3 feet of
counter space and a problem with electricity if I have more than two
appliances in operation at one time. My priorities seem to be to find a
working outlet for the coffee maker so as to not interrupt its brewing cycle
and then head to the basement to deal with the kicked breaker!

Other suggestions:
Bake it the oven for an hour.
Simmer, not boil, on stovetop
Soak overnight and then simmer 35-45 minutes. Soaking also starts the
sprouting process, which helps nutritional and enzyme value.
Use a heat diffuser
Spray a little oil in the bottom of the pot
Microwave on medium 30 seconds then cover and microwave on low 40 minutes.
Microwave but spray oil in dish first.

Thanks again,
