I can certainly understand the anger some of us have about misdiagnosis and
some of those in the medical profession. However, I don't think it is fair
to generalize and blame all those in the medical profession. We are indeed
fortunate to have several medical professionals that are interested or
concerned enough to take part in these discussions. I hope we don't heap
abuse on them because of the actions or inactions of others. Gross
generalizations are unfair to far too many in the field. My daughter was
"diagnosed" well over a decade ago by a very caring GP that was filling in
for her regular doctor. This doctor thought my daughter's low weight and
distended (sp?) stomach may be caused by a wheat allergy. We tried to
eliminate all wheat (not gluten -- who knew then?) with remarkable results.
After seeing the results, the "diagnosing" GP suggested follow-up treatment
and analysis by specialists at Boston's Children's hospital, where she did
get the biopsy. The rest, as they say, is history. Despite the fact that
our GP was not totally correct and did not know what celiac's disease was
(she does now), my daughter owes her current excellent health to this doctor
doing the best she could. Yes I wish she was diagnosed at birth and we
didn't go through the vomit sessions and weight loss, but doctors are human.
I appreciate her work though it wasn't perfect. I also appreciate the input
of the doctor's and other health care professionals on this list. I know you
aren't perfect nor always correct, but which of us is?
