I was researching certain diseases that require special dietary needs
and came across insurance coverage possibly for PKU diets. Does anyone
know if celiac is a genetic metabolic disorder? Would it classify our
gluten restricted problems too? We should all write to our house
insurance committe. Are ther any celiac lawyers out there?

Thanks,

Alison Payne

Legislative Issues

The Pennsylvania House Insurance Committee has rescheduled their vote on
House Bill No. 2723, more commonly known as the amendment to the Medical
Foods Insurance Coverage Act for May 13, 1999. This bill requires health
insurance companies to provide coverage for medically necessary food
products as part of the treatment for PKU and certain other genetic
metabolic disorders. We need everyone to send a letter to the members of
the commitee asking for their support of this legislation. If possible,
enclose a picture of the person with PKU - a picture says a lot more
than a letter!

Thanks to Dean Jerrehian and Jodi Schatz, parents of Matt,(5), PKU,
and Emma, (4), for the following information:

"We need the help of Pennsylvania residents (and those of you with
friends and family in PA).

Thanks to the efforts of a number of people, a bill is before the
Insurance Committee of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives that,
if passed, will require insurance company prescription plans to cover
low protein foods. The Committee will act on the Bill in the fall and
then send it to the full House and Senate. As we all know, this very
important legislation will make it possible for more children and adults
with PKU to maintain the diet.

To help promote its passage, I am asking that all of you who live in
Pennsylvania (and/or your friends and family who live in Pennsylvania)
to take the time to send a letter to the members of the Insurance
Committee and your local state Representative (when it goes to the
Senate I will notify you all again). Personalized letters are best -
with pictures of yourself, your children or family. I have attached
(and inserted below) a model letter which can be used as a guide.
Whether you have PKU, or are a parent, grandparent or friend of a child
with PKU, your letters will help. If you don't know who your
representative is, email me with your address and if possible your PA
House Representative District No (from the bottom right corner of your
voter registration card) and I will let you know.

The members of the Insurance Committee are as follows:

Nicholas Micozzie (Chairman) William Adolph
John Lawless J. Scot Chadwick
Thomas Dempsey John Fichter
Thomas Gannon Joseph Gladek
Robert Godshall Steven Nickol
Roy Reinard Larry Sather
Curt Schroder Patricia Vance
