Here are some more late comments on my post:

________________

I am surprised you did not get a huge response to this initial email about
oats. I did not respond as I found out years ago that I feel best when I
avoid all grains including oats. I try to stick to a low sugar, paleo-like
diet. Seems to work well for my blood sugar too.

At a meeting years ago I heard a doctor say that there was a protein
sequence in oats that was very similar to one found in wheat and we would
hear about that in the future. I have not seen such a study published. Maybe
I missed it?

I think this is an important paper

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19748229 "Novel immune response to gluten
in individuals with schizophrenia." I am glad to see papers appearing that
look beyond CD.

____________

I'm catching up on emails. Thank you for publishing this email. I too feel
leery about oats. My children and I, who are all celiacs, tried the
certified gluten free, oats matzah a few years ago. We all were violently
ill and could not discern the difference between that reaction and the one
we have to gluten.

I worry about a product where the recommendation for celiacs is not to
consume more than 1/2 cup a day. If you go over the half a cup, does damage
result? if this is the case, why eat it at all.

In the interest of full disclosure, don't think grains are healthy for
anyone and we avoid them all in our family.

___________

Bob's Red Mill has certified Gluten Free Oats for sale now at Whole Foods.
My son has celiac and has been able to have them without problems.

_______________

Even if you don't want oats because you like oatmeal, oatmeal cookies and
apple crisp, oats as a source of soluble fiber is a good reason to want
oats, IMHO, especially since standard grain sources of fiber on a gf diet
are limited.
