There was a great cartoon which I used to keep on the wall of my
consulting room (years ago when I used to be a doctor). It was a doctor
looking at a patient's finger and saying "Well, Bill, it looks like a
paper cut, but we better run lots of tests to make sure." It had
nothing to do with celiac. It had everything to do with the need (on
the part of the patient and the doctor) to be reassured when dealing
with responsibility- the ability to trust one's own judgement and to
proceed along the path when you are not sure of the way. Which is not
to say that road maps are not helpful- but there are times when they too
are not available or reliable. Jack Maines Ithaca NY
