Thanks to all of you who took the time to reply to my request for recalling a
posting on liver enzymes. It is indeed heartening to see the response from so
many in such a short time. I will summarize some of the responses, but
encourage anyone with a specific question to seek more information through
the celiac listing service.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

It was actually a history of elevated liver enzymes that caused my doctor to
send me to the GI specialist. The celiac diagnosis was found purely
byaccident. By the way, the enzymes have normalized since being on the
GFdiet.

This relationship is mentioned in the discussion of symptoms in the book
Coeliac Disease, edited by Dr. Michael Marsh, published by Blackwell
Scientific Publishing.

I don't have any info in front of me, but I can tell you from experience that
my liver enzymes were abnormal until I was finally diagnosed and went on a gf
diet. After that, I heard from many people that it is very common for celiacs
to have elevated liver tests. Interesting, since none of the doctors knew why
they were high.

There is a correlation between decreased alkaline Phosphatase and celiac
disease which is from liver and also decreased amylase from the pancreas
which is pancreatic insufficiency due to malabsorption and celiac disease or
leaky gut.

I missed that post as well but thought your post was interesting. Last year
before being diagnosed I had high liver enzymes consistently for over a year.
I haven;t had them tested recently but now maybe I should after being gf for
5 months.

I believe that was my message. I am not celiac but am gluten intolerant. My
liver enzymes were extremely high when I was ingesting gluten and dropped to
normal levels after I cut the gluten out. I hope this helps.

Good news for anyone concerned about liver enzymes! Consensus seems to be
that elevated liver enzymes just come along with having celiac. The levels
will normalize slowly, probably within a year of being gf. It is very common
for liver tests to be elevated due to celiac disease. Mine were, and the
doctors just kept acting puzzled by it. Then I talked to other celiacs and
read literature....... it was all there explaining that it affects the
enzymes. After you have been on the gf diet for at least a year, so much
will start normalizing. It doesn't happen immediately.

I had elevated liver enzymes that went back to normal after being on the gf
diet for 3 months. I have read that there is a definate correlation between
the two

The doctor said that there just isn't enough research on this but that it is
common in Celiacs.
