I received 31 very intersting replies. Interesting, because sometimes "migraine" can be worse than childbirth. I heard from one lady who had been suffering (over the holidays) for 5 days. They can be miserable! I like this reply from Lily:

only thing I can use for migraine pain is a narcotic IV

The pain of these can be so bad, you think of the Bill Crosby routine...."Give me morphine!"

What to do, what to do?

First of all, let me quote Anne Sokolowski, a frequent poster:

migraines are usually the result of food allergies, so...keep a food diary, noting
reactions. There is a very high corelation between food and migraines.

Knowing other people's triggers might help identify yours. This from Pat:

I had once what an ophthalmologist diagnosed as probably an optical migraine. I had found some chocolate mints with aspartame and was eating many each day. Then one evening I started seeing every thing as moving and then falling as if going over a waterfall. I didn't think to try closing one eye, then the other, to see if it was one eye only. It lasted a few minutes and was very frightening. Then I read where aspartame can cause optical disturbance. I have avoided it since and have had no more problems in the 5 or so years since.

This from Mary Ann:

When I first went gluten free I developed migraines, including ocular
migraines. My doctor asked if I was baking my own bread, which I was.
Turned out that warm yeast is a trigger for me. I stopped baking bread and
the migraines went away.

This from Lanette:

the last year researching celiacs i found a couple of articles on
delphi forum that link neurological symptoms to the research on peptid
strings; i was struck by the statements that the dairy ones were so
similar to the wheat ones. now i understand why some people are
casein-free as well as wheat-free. it is not just being lactose
intolerant. it would be worth cutting back on eggs and dairy to see if
the migraine symptoms improve, do you think?

That's a good point. I don't do dairy, because I know that is one of my triggers. It's so automatic now, I almost forgot to mention it.

Coffe, chocolate, and chemical fragrances also were mentioned. And stress. Easy to note, hard to control.

I know I have two very off-the-wall triggers:
hydrogenated fats -- I don't/can't tolerate maragines, vegetable shortenings or chocolate with partially hydrogenated veg. oil. Or baked products. Or coffee creamers.

Secondly, aged meats -- amines? I didn't research it today, but I have notice that my ground beef has to be fresh or I'm down for the day. Other triggers for me are almonds or filberts, both of which I used to love.

So, keep a food diary, and watch for things like dairy, eggs, yeast, aspartame, coffee, chocolate, gluten ingestion, hydrogenated fats, aged meats, perfumes and fragrances, and nuts. I have more accumulated wisdom to share in my next post.
