Thanks to all who responded to my question. I received a total of 42
replies.

My question was: I would appreciate your feedback on the arthritis
issue. I have been GF since the end of November and have developed
joint stiffness and pain all over. I am particularly stiff in the
mornings but also when I sit for a while and then get up, it takes me a
few minutes to be able to straighten up and begin to move again. Once
I am up and about I do well. Has anyone experienced this after going
GF?

The majority of those who responded have developed the same problem
after going GF and 6 said they have gotten worse. 2 said they had no
pain after going GF.

3 were told by their doctors that arthritis and CD go hand in hand.

4 thought I should see a doctor and get checked for possible RA, Lupus
or Fibromyalgia.

1 suggested I post my question at:
http://forums.delphiforums.com/celiac/messages, where there are
knowledgeable people, among them doctors to answer questions.

2 have developed RA after going GF. 1 had RA before being diagnosed
with CD. 1 has developed Ankylosing Spondylitis after experiencing
back pain.

1 suggested the "Eat Right For Your Blood Type" diet.

2 take Vioxx for the pain.  1 takes Celebrex;  Several take Ibuprofen;
One takes several prescription anti-inflammatory drugs; 1 takes Kaprex
by Metagenics which is more GI friendly.

Several suggested to eliminate dairy; 2 suggested to eliminate soy and
nightshade vegetables (potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant) from
diet; 1 suggested to stop eating rice. 1 thought I should stop eating
corn. 1 suggested eliminating corn & dairy and taking large doses of B
vitamins.

2 thought that they were the only ones experiencing arthritic pain and
stiffness.

Several said exercise helps. 1 suggested YMCA water aquatics.

1 has been GF for 6 years and still experiencing pain.

1 said his doctor said pain would resolve at 1 year GF and it did.

Several attributed pain to age. One suggested " secret is to keep
active and keep those joints moving".

1 thought she inherited the arthritis from her mother.

1 has been GF for 3 years and beginning to develop knee pain.

2 said I described what they were going through.

1 suggests that it is a direct reaction to foods or inflammation/immune
reactions to foods, since most of us have many food sensitivities or
allergies.

1 developed joint pain & stiffness after 1 1/2 years GF. Thought the
new condition related to her recent pregnancy.

1 asked if I had any arthritic conditions before going GF?

1 said CD often causes a flare in arthritic symptoms and the GF diet
helps the flare but the arthritis will always be there. Stiffness in
the morning is classic of arthritis. Experiences may vary depending on
type of arthritis and causes.

1 said the arthritis was just chance and that going GF did not cause
the arthritis. They had arthritis before going GF and over the past 20
years it has gotten worse.

1 said she experiences stiffness and joint pain from any sluggishness
in colon and suggested Natural Calm.

1 said her husband has same problem and his doctors have no good
answers. The doctors said as soon as the gluten is under control the
pain should decrease. His last gluten test was <20 but he is still in
severe pain. He used to play men's softball but now not able to put on
a shirt without pain.

1 suggested after going GF we are susceptible to inflammation of
various kinds.

Wishing you all the very best,
Bobbie
