I went to a local meeting "Diabetes what is it & what can I do about
it".  I knew it was a DM 101 type class, but  I usually pick some tidbit
of information that is new.
Red flag things to look out for presented in the format of the:

Three Hypers

Hyperglycemia-glucose
Hypertension-blood pressure
Hyperlipidemia- cholesterol

And that all of them need to be under control for long term diabetes
care.

They also included a list of meds that can be problematic for
diabetics...

Drugs associated w Hyperglycemia:

Alcohol
Asparginase (Elspar)
Sympathomimetics (Terbutaline)
Combination Oral Contraceptive
Diazoxide (Proglycem)
Diuretics (Water Pills)
Glucocorticosteroids (Predinsone)
Glycerol
Lthium salts
Niacin (Large doses)
Pentamidine (Nebupent)
Phenytolin (Dilantin)
Rifampin
Thiazide Diuretics
Furosemide (Lasix)
Bumetanide (Bu,ex)
Indapamide (Lozol)
Beta Blockers
Calcium channel blockers
Phenobarbital sodium
Cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan)
Epinephrine like drugs (Decongestants & Diet Pills)
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents
Nicotine
Caffeine
Sugar-containing syrups
Fish oils

Drugs associated w Hypoglycemia:

Pentamidine (Nebupent)
Phenylbutazone (Butazolidin)
Salicylates (4-6 grams daily)
Anabolic steroids
Beta-adrenergic blocker
Coumadin
Chloraphenicol
Chloroquine
Disopyramide (Norpace)
Sulfonamides (Bactrim/ Septra/ Sulfa/Ect)
Clofibrate (Atromid-S)
Alcohol

3. Many medications ARE the best choices for you.

Interestingly enough notice alcohol appears on both + & - lists- I'm
sure it has to do w/ the sugar content of the alcohol.

They also mentioned it can take 6 weeks for retinal damage (blurry
vision) to clear itself after a bout with extreme high bg.
