Vera ,
Hope this message reaches you in time, didn't download yours until this
am! It is hard to advise you without knowing what original screening
involved or services Charlotte has been receiving to this point, but I'll
give it a try. First of all, take the Dr.'s report and any substantiating
documentation of change in diagnosis with you. Also IQ. report. Re. evals
request PT, OT. and learning disability. It is a lot of testing to
subject Charlotte to but, it's the only way to get a firm handle on true
extent of problems and abilities. If objections are raised re last 2 ask
them how they account for differences between IQ. scores.
Services to request depend on eval results. Adaptive Phys Ed will most
likely be required (law says excluding disabled kids from gym is illegal.)
Find out if district has PT, OT. professionals if so explore the possibility
of having some of therapy done during free periods at school. Spastic kids
often find physical process of writing, doing homework and test taking
difficult, if this is true for Charlotte ask about untimed tests (or
extended time limits,) possibility of training in shorthand or use of tape
recorder to augment note taking, and also possibility of computer training
using speech recognition program such as Dragon Dictate for completing
papers and homework. This type of program takes a while to set up properly
but allows for user to speak rather than type compositions, papers,
letters, and even e-mail. (The gadgets of science fiction and Star Trek are
becoming real!) :-)
This is the time to speak up! Also take notes and get names and phone
numbers, as much as possible! Good Luck
and please let us know how it goes! (I'm sure many other members of the list
could also help with these issues in the future.)
