Well the extra "liability" cover just comes as part of the medical insurance
I
took out (all medical cover is free in the UK - not so in France). There is
a
basic "reciprocal arrangement" (which means the French get full cover over
here, and we get basic cover over there!!).

Which, again, forces me to wonder why Churchill & Roosevelt felt it was so
important to spend the lives of countless Tommies, Yanks and Canucks on the
shores of a nation that loathes us all. As one wag observed, "The only time
the French want [us] to go to war is when the Germans are sipping coffe in
Paris." I know, I know...the analogy doesn't fit your situation, but one
should never pass on an opportunity to snub the French.

It always tickled me that my normal "contents" insurance covers damage by my
"butler or other domestic staff", don't think there's much chance of that
clause being exercised!!

Roger that, Deri. Not only is it funny to contemplate having a "domestic
staff", but anyone who has kids knows that the "contents" have pretty much
been destroyed anyway.

As I'm certain you discovered on your trip here, every U.S. state has
different laws regarding automobile accident liability. When that is
compounded with the diverse rental car companies' procedures, I admire you
for your courage in driving on this side of the pond--especially travelling
interstate.

Kyle
