Hi guys,

Here's an interesting piece that was distributed by the International
Association of Emergency Managers (to which I belong). Very timely in
light of disasters like Katrina, Midwest flooding or the Loma Prieta
quake.

Subject: [iaem-list] interesting piece on disability populations in
refugee camps post disaster/war

Lessons that stretch far beyond refugee camps...

Disability Populations in Refugee Camps
by Jennifer Mincin
[June 30 2008]

Sheri Fink <http://www.propublica.org/site/author/sheri_fink> ,
investigative reporter for ProPublica.org <http://www.propublica.org/> ,
wrote an article on a hidden and pervasive issue many of us in the field
have been aware of for quite some time - how disabled refugees are
consistently left behind. The article outlined a report recently
released by the Women's Commission on Refugee Women and Children
<http://www.womenscommission.org/> , Disabilities Among Refugees and
Conflict-Affected Populations (June, 2008). Disability issues have
additional complexities in developing countries and war torn and
disaster affected areas. Generally speaking, there are two broad
disability categories in war zones and disaster areas: individuals who
had a disability prior to the war/disaster and individuals who became
disabled as a result of the war/disaster. Both are discussed in the
report with primary focus on refugee camps and displaced disabled
populations...http://www.nemrc.net/monday.aspx
