Oh yes, I use the Slackware distribution on my laptop and the Redhat one on
my desktop (it has  the drivers I needed for the USB peripherals).  Can you
run the X window software on yours?  Gnome is a really cool GUI and I
believe it'll  run in a miminal setting.
