I started out as a client of rehab(Texas) in 1956. Went to get a Master's in
Rehab. Counseling in 1961(paid gor thru Federal RSA funds, not state agency).
I have trained Rehab. Counselors for 33 years at the University of Memphis.
Ken summarizes what the state rehab agency can do pretty well. Services they
will or will not pay for vary from regions within the state, from state to
state and from various times of the year when agencies are low on funds. Most
states will routinely pay for training. Training can be on-the-job,
vocational training or higher education. Most states will pay for a degree.
In Tennessee the rule is eight semesters of college. Room and boards, books
and needed equipment is based on economic need of the individual. VERY FEW
state agencies are known for doing job placement, even though they are
supposed to do this by law. Again, here inn Memphis, there are several
private agencies, including the local UCP, who contract with the state to do
job placement after the clients are trained. These agencies have varying
success rates. Voc Rehab is good generally at diagnostic work which makes you
eligible by establishing that a client is disabled. They are also good at
providing training, including college tuition. The quality of other services
varies
from state to state as Ken says. It also varies with the individual
counselors, some of whom are genuine client advocates, while others are paper
pushing bureaucrats.
If special equipment, such as a trike, can be justified as being needed for
training, it can be purchased.

<< some states are better than others. alabama is pretty good about paying for
school. next door georgia is no so good. but when it comes to a job
search... i do not know that any off them are that good. check into
getting them to pay for school (bureaucratic work for them), but later after
school don't expect much(that is real effort.)
just my advice. >>
