I'm not so sure it is a joke.  My memory is shot so bad I can't believe it.
I can't remember tons of stuff anymore and people are always saying in a
conversation, "Don't you remember this thing or that?  I just told you the
other day."
After a while I get sick of hearing it "don't you remember."  If I
remembered
I would not be asking the same stupid thing.
