i think another problem is that the government requires teachers to do so
many things that are not teaching.

I agree with you.  That is why I am furious about the legislation to
certify people to teach after they worked in business or some other
field after just taking a few education courses.

I am an elementary teacher so I teach "it all."  But in college, we were
required to take courses in all subject areas to learn content and how
to teach it.  But I know for a fact that Millersville University is one
of the best state teacher's colleges out there.  I have had students as
interns in my class from other local schools with far less background
and course work to support their teaching.

We need teachers in parts of the country desperately - but not everyone
should be a teacher...
