I suspect it's from a combination of two factors - abuse and genetic  
abnormalities from inbreeding (that is, miscarriages and early  
childhood deaths from conditions caused by genetic mutations).  There  
is a higher chance of miscarriages and genetic abnormalities when you  
don't have genetic diversity;

more publicity to devout church members who are not ministers or  
priests, but abuse children.
