Subject: Brain In The News: RIGHT SIDED STROKES OFTEN MISSED

 <http://amenclinics.com>

"Brain in the News" is a weekly commentary on how brain science relates to the
news. The brain is involved in everything we do. Wherever there are human
stories the brain is involved. From the impact of war and natural disasters on
the brain to drug abuse scandals to courtroom dramas to politics the brain is in
the news, and you can read about it here.

Brain In The News: RIGHT SIDED STROKES OFTEN MISSED

The brain is everywhere there is news about people, even in the right
hemisphere.

People with strokes affecting the right side of the brain may be going
undiagnosed and untreated, experts say. German research in The Lancet found
left-sided stroke patients were more likely to be admitted to hospital and
treated promptly than the right counterparts. Signs of a right-sided stroke may
be harder to spot because they do not typically affect speech, unlike left-sided
strokes. Both types of stroke have similar impacts on day-to-day living,
however.

Prompt treatment is key to improving outcomes and survival, making early
detection of paramount importance. The right half of the brain is responsible
for perceptual skills - making sense of what you see, hear and touch - and
spatial skills - judging depth, size, distance or position in space. This means
the signs and symptoms of a stroke in this area of the brain may be more subtle,
such as the individual having a problem with awareness.

Dr Christian Foerch and colleagues at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in
Frankfurt looked at stroke data for over 20,000 patients between 1997 and 2002.
They found more of the recorded cases were left-sided strokes than right-sided
ones - 11,300 cases compared to 8,700 cases, respectively. Dr Foerch's team does
not believe left-sided strokes are more common than right-sided ones but instead
that strokes on the right of the brain are more often missed. Compared to those
with right-handed strokes, the patients affected on the left of the brain were
more likely to get the right treatment and be admitted to hospital within three
hours of their symptoms starting. "The probable explanation for our findings is
that symptoms... are more noticeable if language or dominant hand function is
affected, both of which are located in the left hemisphere in most individuals,"
said the researchers.

By contrast, right hemisphere stroke is usually associated with neglect, which
reduces the individual's awareness that something might be amiss, they said. It
is important to ensure that stroke patients are scanned and diagnosed as quickly
as possible so that they can be started on the most appropriate course of
treatment. The report also noted that it was urgent for hospitals to have stroke
specialists who can assess and treat patients quickly. Evidence shows that
patients treated by specialists have improved outcome and recovery compared to
those who are not.

Our radio show, Change Your Brain, Change Your Life, continues to receive an
enthusiastic response. Last week my colleague Larry Momaya did a wonderful job
filling in for me. This week we are going to discuss neurogenesis. Tune in
Saturdays at 8 - 9 AM (PST) on 1170 KCBQ in San Diego or 1300 KKOL in Seattle or
