I asked the same question a few days ago ;-)  From what everyone has
posted in reply they sound like a mushed up corn product mixed with
milk, and then served in an amazingly wide range of ways.  Been
wracking my brains to think of an antipodean equivalent - but it
sounds like porridge to me (and yes, everyone, I know porridge is made
of oats, and grits are corn, but it is the closest I can come up
with).
