Disturbing indeed. Not so much for the "word" as for his inability to
forgive his captors. Nevertheless, I went to the "Chronicle"'s web page and
found (unsuprisingly) a leftist bias beyond the pale. This, however, still
does not excuse Sen. McCain's inappropriate remark.

So I "went-a-looking" for references to the remark from large, mainstream
newspapers from different regions of the country and could find no
references to Sen. McCain's remarks, save for a few "fringe" websites. What
gives? Is it that S.F. has a particularly large Asian community and that
the Chronicle is pandering? Possibly. Could it be that the rest of the
country's media minimalize racial slurs? Hardly. What better way to stir
the pot than have salacious tidbits about a candidate's verbal faux pas? I
finally did find one reference at salon.com

Well, it seems he did use these words, and more (from Salon):

"But McCain has occasionally been criticized for his blunt tongue in matters
that have nothing to do with his POW experiences. He has joked that "the
nice thing about Alzheimer's is you get to hide your own Easter eggs,"
referred to the retirement community Leisure World as "Seizure World" and
yukked it up before an audience, saying that Chelsea Clinton was
unattractive because Attorney General Janet Reno is her father. For most of
these gaffes, McCain has apologized. But he holds firm to "gooks." "

To be honest, in the privacy of my own circle of friends, I've used such as
these. In that sense, I'm no better than he, but I'm troubled that McCain
can't control his tongue in public. I personally struggle with the same
difficulty and oft end with my foot firmly, orally set. I like Sen. McCain
for his (sometimes brutal) honesty, but even more than the verbal gaffes,
the thing that bothers me most is his unwillingness to even entertain the
idea of forgiveness for his captors. This comes from a man who claims to
take the moral high road. Would appear that the Honorable Senator is
relativizing morality.
