Thanks, Kendall, mags and all. Yes, Anna stayed with a counselor provided
by the school system almost the whole of last week. The school brought in a
team of a dozen or so grief counselors for the student body. Chris was a
very sweet kid. We think we might know what triggered his decision. Back
in the summer he was hanging out with some other boys and decided to shoot
firecrackers off in an abandoned house that the Fire Dept. was getting ready
to burn down. Unfortunately, one of the cherry bombs beaat the fire dept.
to the punch. Once the kids realized the fire was out of control, they ran
(as teenage boys are wont to do) and got caught. Chris had kept this from
Anna, Laura and I. His dad came down pretty hard on him and I think Chris'
had built the consequences up in his mind to the point where he was
terrified of going to court. He had never stolen so much as a candy bar or
done anything other that this incident with his buddies. It's unlikely that
he would have even received prrobation, and even if he did his record would
be expunged at 18.

Also, Laura and I had told both Chris and Anna that we were not comfortable
with her dating at 15 (he was 17). We encouraged them to remain friends and
he was welcome in our home anytime. Laura and I felt some twinges of guilt
initially, but realized that his response to our request was positive and
our decision probably had no bearing on his decision to end his life.

Anna has received some very cruel cell phone texts and emails from some
girls at school who thought they were being anonymous (guess they'd never
heard of a MAC/IP address). We addressed the situation with the parents and
I'm confident that all will deal with their daughters appropriately--save
for one mother whose "little girl" would NEVER do such a thing! (The very
idea! :-/ ) Kind of hard to deny a text message with your kid's cell phone
number attached to it, but some moms and dads still try.

Anyway, thanks for the prayers for our family and Chris'. After Ike and
this I am emotionally exhausted. When I decompress a bit and get some time
I'll tell some Ike stories. If these kids I worked with represent the
majority of their age group, I think our country will end up just fine. It
was very, very cool to be in the company of real heroes. Makes all of this
election BS seem so juvenile in perspective.
