Me too.  I didn't smoke every day, and rarely smoked alone.  Like you said,
bumming a cigarette was a safe "icebreaker" to get a conversation started
with a member of the opposite sex.

to it.  I did it for the socialisation as everyone I hung out with in high
school and college smoked, and I met more people bumming cigarettes than at
parties.
