True, but Germany did have a democracy before Hitler, and Japan was so
shellshocked by defeat from an "inferior" foe, they took to democracy quite
readily. You're not getting away with history that easily, Ken. I know
history, too. I think the reason why we kept troops there was to make sure
the communists wouldn't come over. It wasn't to quell aggression. And that
to me is the big difference.

well, lets examine some of the places we have exported
democracy. Japan is a good place to start. we had to
keep troops there for years, but, japan appears to
have turned out pretty good. Germany under hitler was
hardly a democracy. we left troops there many years,
but, lookes like it turned out pretty good. the common
denominator seems to be the willingness to take the
time necessaary to plant a democracy. if you can't
microwave one in a few minutes most will say, "it
can't be done."
