What about the DD who work? There are many people with DD working in mail rooms, fast food restaurants, sheltered workshops, etc.

Sorry, don't want to be-"labour" the point, lol! :-)

Yvonne,

I'm pretty sure that the ADA law as passed by the U.S. Congress during the
first Bush administration is directed specifically at the workplace. I
think this would preclude folks with DD and kids. Could be wrong.

There has been some backlash among U.S employers due to the vague language
used to write the Act. There is a move afoot, aided by recent court
decisions, to more closely define the scope of the word "disabled" as it
pertains to this law.

Oh, absolutely, I agree! Did this guy quote the ADA word for word? Is there
a mechanism in place to review wording or would a new Act need to be passed
to make language changes?

This guy at Kyle's work sounds like such a jerk, BTW. I AM outraged on
Kyle's behalf that he would presume to do this. I didn't mean to imply
otherwise in my post. :-)

you are right, but, it should be worded in such a way as to protect the
privacy of those of the disability community that are capable of advocating
for themdelves and to keep busybodies from interferring.

Patronizing for you folks but the ADA covers all disabilities including =
developmentally delayed and children, no? If this clause wasn't in there, =
then it would depend on the individuals themselves... some of whom might =
not be able to do their own advocacy. I work with people with psychiatric =
disabilities and have had to advocate for them to get even basic living =
accomodations sometimes. Although we don't have the ADA in Canada, the =
basic principles are the same up here.

Just my $.04 CDN. :-)

Oh but I definitely do. That's what I find so patronising! It assumes we
don't know any better so anyone else can make our decisions for us. =
Grrrrr!

find this insulting?
