I've noticed this too.  I've also observed in these cases that their children
are sometimes made to assume the parental role, not only for the sake of
self, but for that of the negligent parent.

Man, I had a fairy tale childhood.  When I think about stuff like this, I am
really reminded of how lucky I am to have these great memories.  My parents
were on the ball and I'm so grateful.
