Actually there has been a time in more recent history when our civil
liberties were taken. That was in the 1950s during the McCarthy era.  People
were jailed, people were spied on, blackballed, blacklisted and many lost
their jobs. People were afraid to speak out, they were afraid to be seen with
others...

Camryn Manheim's dad and grandfather or uncle all lost their jobs. They were
interviewed about it by PBS TV, and I saw this tape in the mid 1970s... very
scary stuff.  It was not safe to be known as a communist in the US. In this
country which used to pride itself on freedom of religion and freedom to
speak one's mind.
