Hi.... I work at Carleton University in Ottawa Canada.  I work as a PCA
right in residence.  We have a great program that offers gender choice,
24hr. attendent services.  We come right into your room and assist you in
activities os daily living (showering and such) and are on call when ever
you need a hand with other no scheduled activities. The following is a
description from one of our info books:

Carleton University Attendant Services Program


Program Overview
The Carleton University Residence Attendant Services Program, operated
by the Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities, offers
attendant services 24-hours-a-day, 12-months-a-year to students with
physical disabilities in residence. Normally the program does shut down
during extended holiday periods, such as the Christmas break, but if
enough notice is given, it may be possible to arrange for service during
holiday periods.
There are approximately 20 student attendants employed with the program
who assist students with disabilities with activities of daily living
such as: rising and retiring, toileting, personal hygene, and dressing.
Attendants also assist with tasks such as laundry, light housekeeping,
setting up books and computers, and eating in the cafeteria. Attendants
are governed by a code of conduct which outlines expectations and
acceptable behaviour in accordance with the goals and philosophy of the
program.
The Residence Attendant Services Program was the first program in Canada
to guarantee same-gender choice; there is always a male and a female
attendant available. The attendants carry a pager in order for the
clients to contact them. When calling the pager, clients can specify
whether or not they need an attendant of the same gender.
The program operates on a first-call, first-served basis, unless a call
of greater urgency is receive. To provide clients with as much
flexibility as possible, none of the services provided except for
wake-up times are scheduled. Clients can call at anytime and an
attendant will respond within 10 minutes. Although wake-up times are
scheduled, one can request a time change one day in advance. Meal times
follow the normal cafeteria hours and operate on a first-call,
first-served basis. Night routines operate in the same manner.
The Residence Attendant Services Program is a co-operative community.
Although every attempt is made to meet individual needs, the client must
realize that other students are employing the service an thus a certain
degree of flexibility must exist to ensure the program operates
smoothly. Each client must be willing to compromise in order to
facilitate the day-to-day life of other clients in the program. The most
important aspect of the Carleton University Attendant Services Program
is its philosophy of independent living. This philosophy provides
persons with disabilities the opportunity to make decisions concerning
matters that affect themselves, as they relate to all aspects of living.
The Residence Attendant Services Program recognizes this fundamental
right and protects it by adopting the practice of client directed care
which recognizes the client's responsibility to determine what services
are required, and when and how services are provided. This philosophy
gives every client the right to structure their own lives to meet their
own goals and objectives.
The program also gives the client a voice in the management of attendant
services. Rather than token representation, the clients effectively
control a number of committees that deal with everyday issues affecting
service delivery. Among other responsibilities, clients hire their own
attendants and participate on the Clients' Committee which directly
advises the Co- ordinator.

Application Procedure
This is the recommended application procedure for applying to the
attendant services program.
1.Contact Vocational Rehabilitation Services (if you are a resident of
Ontario) one year prior to attending university, to be placed on the
waiting list for an assessment of your needs and to tell them that you
are intending to attend Carleton University.
2.Contact the Attendant Services Co-ordinator at the address below to
inform him of your intentions to attend Carleton and to discuss your
required services. An application form for the Attendant Services
Program will be sent to you.
3.Apply to Carleton for academic admission. One must meet all academic
requirements and deadlines to be accepted into the University. Refer to
the Carleton University Undergraduate Calender for admission
requirements. Academic admission does not guarantee acceptance into the
program. The program does not consider academic performance in deciding
on admission to the program beyond the student being accepted to the
University.
4.Inform Housing and Food Services that you require an accessible
residence room. This can be done by either asking the Atendant Services
co-ordinator to inform housing of your needs or by contacting Housing
and Food Services directly at the address below. It is advisable to
request an accessible room as soon as possible because the distribution
of these rooms operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
5.Arrange a visit of the campus through Matthew Cole if desired. This
visit will provide a better idea of what Carleton has to offer by way of
other services. First-hand knowledge of Carleton's accessiblility can be
gained through a visit to the campus.
6.Contact the Paul Menton Centre at Carleton to inform them about
academic requirements such as note-takers, tutors, scribes or exam
procedures.
7.All services offered by the program are contigent on receiving funding
grants. In addition the program has a set capacity for the number of
students who may receive services at one time.
