Hello everyone!
My name is David Brandon and I'm a dad to Gareth, who had major surgery in May 1997, at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh, Scotland (UK) to remove a very large and equally rare brain tumour. The tumour, although benign, has left Gareth with some problems, including a right sided hemiplegia.
My wife and I are currently trying to find out if there is a connection between the hemiplegia and Cerebral Palsy, of which Gareth does show symptoms of having, but this is probably understandable, considering how long the tumour was in his head before he had surgery. Gareth also has a cysto-peritoneal shunt fitted in his head, which drains the excess CSF fluid.
Gareth attends a main stream primary school, but has a full time auxiliary while in class. He needs her for help when climbing up and down steps etc, toileting needs and generally to keep him safe.
Basically, we are looking for any additional information that can help us and of course Gareth. I hope that someone may be able to help us and I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks again!
