It could be fact.

TJ certainly wrote about growing French Artichokes, and certainly (here in the 
UK), we have "Leek Societies/Clubs" (cf. 
<http://visitnewcastleton.com/site/village/microsites/leeks/index_html>). So 
its not beyond the realms of possibility for a local "Artichoke Society"  to 
have had TJ as a member.
