Ten years ago I did it for 18 months, I was working for a
software house as a programmer/analyst. The company was a 100
miles away 3 1/2 hours round trip driving, and I asked at the
interview if I could "homework" (I'd discovered that a government
agency were willing to pay for hardware/phone lines etc.).

Unfortunately it didn't work out as well as it could have, the
work was fine, but you find yourself a bit "out of the loop",
several times the joint MD who I worked for would agree
requirement changes with tge customer without informing me, then
asking me if the new facility had been designed/written about 36
hrs before we were going to demo to the client.

I ended up driving in 3 times a week just to keep a finger on the
pulse. Also working on your own means you miss out on the social
side of employment.

I would consider doing it again now, because communication
methods are so much better, but I would insist on "video
conferencing" and permanent links to their network.
