A few things

Velcro can be replaced if you have a cobbler// shoemaker--repair around
you

Also elastic laces are also good and handy

Only a year?  I'm talking about a loonnng time here, Mike. ;) Actually I
don't like Velcro that much as it doesn't hold as well as shoelaces.
When I bought some back in the 1980s, I was still walking, and they
certainly didn't last as long as lace-ups.
