being independant is one of the hardest thing for a parent of disabled child to accept.
our society still does not want us to be on our own
this society still does not want us to be sexual
its also one of the biggest issue of the african american disabled community..
shelter is a main issue because the streets are alot harder ..
african american disable have to deal with the racism within the disabled community and disablism of american society. so we are in a bind getting hit from both sides with no allies
i've seen both sides of this issue.. if you do basic things on your own there is no reason why you should not be own our own..
i've been on my own for almost 30 years now .. when i graduated from southern ill. university at carbondale .. i went home for a week in december.. it snowed four times in ten days i told my parents thats it i'm moving to berkeley calif.. they had reservations but went along with my plans. i got an apartment on my own within four months and got a job in seven but you have to have the heart and will to achive this goal
no one can teach you will either you have it or you dont

Hi Kathy Jo,

Your parents may miss you if you leave home, but it's time to be independent
of them. You can't live your life for them, you have to do what is right for
you. You need to get used to living on your own without them making your
decisions for you. I hate to think about the day they pass away and you don't know
how to cope on your own. Who is going to "take care" of you when your parents
die? It is hard to lose a parent even if you have been on your own for 25
years. If living in a group home is what you want to do, maybe you should try it
out for six months. If living on your own, with an assistant is what you want,
you should try that now for six months.

I care about you, Kathy Jo. That's why I'm kicking you in the tush now. And
if your parents really love you, they should be encouraging you to be more
independent.
