Probably the same reason the Gladiator arenas were popular in Ancient Rome - humans have always been entertained by the fortunes or misfortunes of others. We could add the Jerry Springer show and its ilk to the list.

IRRITAINMENT: Entertainment and media spectacles that are annoying but you
find yourself unable to stop watching them. The O.J.trials were a prime
example. Bill Clinton's video Grand Jury testimony is another.  And of
course, there's always "Survivor".



first everything does not have to be on topic. can you imagine a family at
the dinner table with only a defined topic to talk about.


now the "Survivor" show, why do you think these show s are so popular?
