Hi Jason,

What a great dad you are! If your daughter is eligible to receive ssi, then
she is automatically eligible for medicaid. Check with the social security
office to find out. This is usually based on family income, so she may or may
not qualify. If not, there are two medicaid waiver programs available that are
NOT based on income. They are based solely on the child's disability. One
program is available through your local Mental Health Mental Retardation
office. If your child qualifies under either category, she can receive medicaid.
The other waiver is available to children with developmental disabilities. The
idea is that the funds enable the family to keep the child in the home and
community, rather than in a more restrictive setting. This waiver is called
different things in different states. Check with the local United Cerebral Palsy
affiliate for information and referral. All this takes digging on your part,
persistence, and an unwillingness to take no for an answer. Good luck.

May I make a personal suggestion? While you are checking with agencies about
the medicaid waivers, please also inquire about support groups. Your
family's happiness will go a long way in helping your daughter reach her potential
and manage her behavior. This is never easy for a family, regardless of income,
education, or social background. Reach out for live help. You are not
alone.

Best wishes,
Wanda
