In October of '98, a supposed "paralytic" (media's term, not mine) who had
been arrested on unspecified charges was being wheeled by an armed sheriff's
deputy through the courthouse where I work. Because he said he was
"paralyzed" he was not cuffed or shackled as is the case with all non-pwds.
As they approached the building entrance, the man leapt from the chair,
wrestled with the deputy and took her service pistol. He ran through the
revolving doors and commandeered the car of an 18 year-old man who had
stopped at the traffic light. Three blocks away, the suspect summarily shot
the young man and pushed his body out of the car. The suspect was
apprehended after a lengthy high-speed chase.

Kind of a different perspective here: The suspect was perceived as a
"non-threat" because he was [believed to have been] disabled. He knew that
he would get less scrutiny if he pretended to be a pwd.

I tried to get the story from our local paper, but the archives only go back
60 days.
