I produced a documentary called GOING TO SCHOOL ~ IR A LA ESCUELA.=A0 It is
a compelling story of inclusion, special education and empowering children
with disabilities and their parents.=A0 The issues of respect, civil rights,
and education for all children are universal and poignantly conveyed.

The project was commissioned by the Class Member Review Committee of the
Chanda Smith Consent Decree in Los Angeles. It was made in the spirit of the
Consent Decree and is a powerful tool to help all members of the educational
community better understand and discuss the purpose of the IDEA. The tape
is available in both English (cc) or in Spanish language versions (see
details below).

"We watched "GOING TO SCHOOL ~ IR A LA ESCUELA" with great interest. The
heroism of the mothers reminded us of our mothers, who also had to fight for
our right to an education....

This film shows how mothers of disabled children today, too, understand that
education is critical to the success of their children who they love so
dearly. They have the IDEA to fight with.

This film is unique because it illustrates the perspectives of the disabled
students. It beautifully shows how the students value their disabled peers,
both as friends and mentors as they plan for their futures as integrated
members of their society.

.....

Parents, disabled children, educators and policy makers should see this
film."
-- The Honorable Judith E. Heumann, former Assistant Secretary, Office of
Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, U.S. Department of =
Education &
-- Jorge H. Pineda, Accountant, National Council on Independent Living,
Board Member of TASH

Filmed in a cinema verite style, the 64 minute documentary highlights the
lives of three seventh graders, and a second grader, revealing the
determination of their parents to see that their children receive an equal
education.=A0 GOING TO SCHOOL ~ IR A LA ESCUELA can be shown in classes,
training sessions or community gatherings. Viewers will find it a memorable
experience.
