Ken, 

Did you turn off your screen saver before you started your defrag?  If
not, under some versions of windows, it starts the process all over
again, as Windows thinks the contents of the drive have changed.

well, i am up. the computer was at 63 % of defrag and
still running. i took the dog out and then i fixed
some breakfast and eat. takes a while to eat and read
the ny times at the same time. it is now at 64 %. so
it may go on into the afternoon. i guess this is why i
do not do this as much as i should.
  i can at least check my email on ben's computer.
