                   Hate Crimes Bill Passed

Jonathan Young, [log in to unmask], writes;

Today, by a vote of 232 to 192, the U.S. House of Representatives passed
the Hate Crimes bill, which has been a long-time priority of the
Clinton-Gore Administration. Earlier this summer, the Senate passed the
legislation by a vote of 57 to 42. Below please find President Clinton's
statement in response to the vote, commending the bipartisan House action.
A fact sheet about a White House event held before the vote, where the
President urged passage of the law, follows the Statement. I've also
provided the President's remarks from the event. Congratulations to all
the civil rights advocates who've been working on this issue for years.

                        STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT

     I applaud the House members who voted today in favor of comprehensive
hate crimes legislation. This courageous bipartisan vote sends a strong
message that everyone deserves equal treatment under the law -- no matter
what his or her race, color, religion, sex, national origin, sexual
orientation, or disability.
