This is my two cents:
I really don't like the idea of medically assisted suicide (that is having
someone who is paid to do a job assist.) I have worked in institutions as a
nurse or aide for the past 25 years-and often with people who were dying. As
a nurse, I don't like the idea that patients may see me as someone who is
willing to help them die now. I am willing and honored to keep people
comfortable while nature takes it's course, but that is very different from
actively choosing the time of death. I didn't become a nurse to do assisted
suicide and I think if that were an area of specialization in nursing or
medicine different people may be attracted to the professions. I haven't at
all addressed how I feel personally about assisted suicide, that is a
separate issue, but to have it institutionalized and have health care
professionals assisting is, I think, wrong.
